This paper explores how public pressure affected the British government’s policies during the Great Game of the nineteenth century. By drawing upon depictions of Afghan leaders to explore how the public was informed of events that occurred in Central Asia, this paper explores whether popular outrage over the execution of Colonel Stoddart and Captain Conolly at the hands of the Emir of Bukhara resulted in a change in government policy, and whether the government was more concerned with transparency or with securing its colonies.
